Work to expand and upgrade the road linking Arusha to the Kenya-Tanzania border post at Namanga has run into difficulties just a few months after getting underway. Problems include late payment of the first instalment of the project money by one of the donors and the theft of important equipment and materials from special camps along the route. In addition local electricity provider Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) is reportedly dragging its heels over the relocation of electricity pylons and power cables to make way for the road expansion.
