Cairo's community of Southern Sudanese residents celebrated the birth of their new nation on 9 July. The expatriates and economic migrants from Africa's newest state, many of whom have lived in Cairo for years, gathered at the Nile Country Club in the lead-up to the declaration of autonomy for the Republic of South Sudan (RSS) at midnight.
