Cape Town promotes marathon as elite sporting event

Organisers of the upcoming Sanlam Cape Town Marathon are promoting it as an "elite" sporting event for aspiring African champions.

Scheduled to take place on 17 September, Cape Town's marathon is the only such event in Africa with gold status from the International Association of Athlete's Federations (IAFF), an honour awarded in March.

The event's organisers say the marathon could act as a springboard for African athletes who wish to make a name for themselves on the international circuit.

The marathon's 42-km route has also been revised for this year and details are expected to be released soon.

There are less than 50 marathons worldwide with IAAF Gold Status. For full information about Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, including registration, see website.
