Mama Ye campaign launched in Accra

The Mama Ye Ghana Campaign has been launched in Accra as part of Ghana's initiative to reduce maternal and new-born deaths.

The awareness programme is being taken to help Ghana achieve one of its key Millennium Development Goals (MDG) to reduce by two thirds the number of mothers and babies who die in child birth by 2015.

This target appears increasingly unlikely but Ghana is now making efforts to reduce the current figure of 350 deaths out of every 100,000 new-born babies to 185 within the next two years.

Experts say that the main obstacles in the way of achieving this goal include the availability, affordability and accessibility to quality healthcare.

A website was launched with information for mothers and health workers, while a national blood donation campaign is being undertaken to increase the country’s blood stocks.

The Ghana campaign is a collaborative effort between the school of Public Health of the University of Ghana, Evidence for Action and the Alliance for reproductive health rights.
