Nairobi modernises its markets

Refurbishment to coincide with construction of new markets.

Nairobi's markets are being refurbished to ensure improved hygiene and increased volumes of trade, as part of plans being undertaken by the city government.

The initiative will see the modernisation of existing markets around the capital and the proposed construction of ten new markets in the greater Nairobi area.

Central to the plan is the refurbishment of the City Market in Parklands which is destined to become the largest retail market in Kenya, with more than 1,000 traders. The original market, along with several others in Nairobi, was gutted by fire in recent years.

The city's plan will also see the upgrading of Nairobi's biggest markets such as Burma, Dandora, Mowlem, Muthurwa, and Umoja I.
