A Nigerian project using cassava waste is among the 16 winning entries in a World Bank-sponsored competition to provide off-grid energy efficient lighting in sub-Saharan Africa. The idea, developed by Joseph Adelegan of Global Network for Environment and Economic Development Research, involves producing biogas from cassava waste to power 2,250 homes in semi-urban and rural areas. The remaining sludge would act as environmentally safe organic fertiliser for low-income farmers.
