The third general population and housing census in Mozambique will take place from 1-15 August. The last nationwide headcount was in 1997, when the population was 16,099,200. The National Statistics Institute (INE), which is coordinating the census, has projected that the population has now reached 19,679,000. Roughly 70,000 Mozambicans are being trained as census takers and supervisors and last-minute preparations are underway for a public information campaign involving religious and civil organisations, youth groups, political parties and private business. Preliminary census results will be made available in November and the final report will be released in late 2009.
