Smoking has been banned in public places in Nairobi under a by-law that is already in force in the cities of Nakuru and Mombasa. Under the restrictions Kenyans caught smoking in schools, public offices, places of worship, at bus stations, in markets or on the streets face a fine of Ksh2,000 or six months in jail. Local government minister Musikari Kombo has said the ban will be extended to other parts of the country in due course.

This is the second time that the city council has introduced smoking restrictions in the capital. In May 2006 a similar ban was suspended after only three days following an appeal by tobacco companies who claimed they had not been given enough time to comply with the new regulations, which included printing a
