Apimondia symposium on beekeeping in Africa

This first international conference to focus on beekeeping and its potential in Africa. Over 500 participants, beekeepers, researchers, agriculturalists and government officials from Tanzania and abroad are expected to attend this five-day international conference organised by Apimondia to look at the importance of bees to farming and the environment.

It is estimated that apiculture in Tanzania, where there are about two million small beekeepers, is one of the quickest ways for poor rural households to double their earnings.

One of the new developments in Tanzania is the achievement in raising stingless honey bees in the Hai district of Kilimanjaro, where there is also a project for the coordination of beekeeping activities in the area.

Tanzania has a beekeeping training institute in Tabora for teaching and research. See also the Apiafrica website for more details of beekeeping in Tanzania. The meeting is at the Arusha International Conference Centre.
