Established after national independence in 1975, the museum occupies a building dating from the mid-1960s that originally housed a Goan association. It contains a large collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings and engravings dating from the 1950s to the present by foreign artists who lived and worked in Mozambique and leading Mozambican artists. There are also works that used to belong to various colonial institutions, some of which are by well-known artists.
