Mchafukoge area
Dominated by Dar es Salaam’s large Asian population, this mixed commercial and residential area due east of Kariakoo feels slightly cut off from the rest of the city and the pace of life is slower here.
The neighbourhood is characterised by wide streets with plenty of greenery; housing is in flats in well-built, once elegant 1930s Liberty-style buildings and taller and less gracious ones constructed two decades later. There are also newer high-rise buildings, many of which are incomplete. There are several mosques around Mosque Street and Hindu temples along Kisutu Street to the north.
Mchafukoge has plenty of small shops selling all essential goods as well as numerous Indian shops and restaurants. There is also a large supermarket in the Harbour View Towers building on Samora Avenue marking the area’s southern edge.
