Dar es Salaam hosts charity marathon

The Dar es Salaam branch of Rotary International is holding the 2012 Marathon & Charity Walk on 14 October as part of its fundraising campaign to help local children fight cancer.

A similar event held by the group last year generated over Tsh 750 million and funded the construction of a new paediatric cancer ward at the 900-bed Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) in Dar es Salaam.

The facility is currently being built and it is hoped that proceeds from this year’s marathon will be sufficient to purchase the equipment and furnishings required to run the ward.

Athletes can sign up to run the 21 km half-marathon or opt to join the 9 km charity walk. The marathon begins on 14 October at 06.00 while the walk starts at 07.00, with registration beginning at 05.00. Both events start and finish at the Police Officer's Mess on Haile Selassie Road.
