Dar es Salaam is to get a hospital specialising in mother and child health under a partnership between the government and the Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation Trust (CCBRT), a Dar-es-Salaam-based organisation working to support people with disabilities and HIV/AIDS orphans.

CCBRT already runs a specialist disability hospital, which opened in 2001 and offers services and treatment aimed at preventing and curing impairments and disabilities and improving the physical wellbeing of people living with disabilities.

The maternity hospital, to be called Baobab, will stand in the grounds of the existing disability hospital on a piece of land donated by the government. Construction is due to start next year and if all goes to plan work should be finished in 2011. Once up and running, the new facility will offer delivery services as well as reproductive health education and HIV/AIDS services.
