21 June 2012. On occasion of the public reading series Stories Spoken, this literature reading is dedicated to a novel by Urs Widmer, entitled My Mother’s Lover.
The story is set in the 1920s in Switzerland, where two lovers meet for the first time and secretly fall in love. The woman is young, rich and beautiful, while her lover is poor and interested only in music. By the end of their lives, he becomes a famous conductor and the richest man in the country, but she is penniless. No one knows of her love for him, it is a secret, which she took to her grave. This novel is based on a real-life affair and tells a story of sacrifice and betrayal, passionate devotion and inevitable suffering. The author is the woman’s son, who decided, after his mother died, to write about her lifelong and unspoken love for a man.
The aim of this series is to introduce contemporary German literature, translated in English, to a Kenyan audience.
Event starts at 18.00.
