Up to 10,000 representatives of government, non-governmental organisations, the private sector and the academic community will gather in Nairobi 6-17 November for an international meeting on climate change. The conference the first of its kind in Kenya is being organised by the United Nations within the context of the UN convention on climate change (UNFCCC). Parties to the convention, adopted at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 and which came into force two years later, will review efforts to prevent global warming. Kenya is a signatory to UNFCCC and the subsequent 1997 Kyoto Protocol, a legally binding international agreement to slash global greenhouse gas emissions.
