Dar es Salaam's Garden Avenue renamed Hamburg Avenue

Street renaming part of twinning with German city

Dar es Salaam's Garden Avenue has been renamed Hamburg Avenue as part of a twinning agreement between the two port cities, in place since 2010.

The renaming of the prominent Dar street follows a similar gesture in the German city last year, when a square in the central HafenCity district was renamed Dar es Salaam Platz.

The renaming ceremony took place in the presence of the German ambassador to Tanzania, Egon Kachanke, in front of the German-built Ocean Road Hospital.

Many of the buildings in the area date back to the turn of the last century, during German colonial rule, and include St Joseph's Cathedral and the Botanic Gardens. The official address of the German embassy to Tanzania, in Umoja House, is also now Hamburg Avenue.
