Cape Town residents and businesses have been urged to reduce their electricity consumption following power failures in the city and surrounding area in mid February. The supply problems caused disruption to traffic, business and transport services. Other cities across the country, including Pretoria and Johannesburg, were also hit by similar failures. In Cape Town the interruptions were caused by a combination of technical problems at the power station and faulty transmission lines. The state utility company Eskom struggled to restore services and has warned that more power failures are likely as the ageing electricity infrastructure struggles to meet growing demand.
