The population of Ethiopia is 76.9 million according to the Population and Housing Census conducted in May 2007, the results of which were published in early December. This compares with 53.4 million in 1994, when the last census was carried out. The figure takes into account the projected growth in population since the data was collected a year and a half ago. United Nations estimates put the actual population of Ethiopia at around 81 million.
