At least one person has been killed and several others injured in an explosion near the Ambassador Hotel in central Nairobi. Some witnesses report having seen a man holding what looked like grenades trying to board a bus when the blast occurred at about 08.00 local time. However, others say a bomb went off in a rubbish bin. Police have cordoned off the affected area and the injured have been taken to city hospitals.

The explosion follows a week-long crackdown on the banned Mungiki sect in Mathare, Nairobi
