The race is on to succeed incumbent president John Kufuor when he steps down at the end of next year after two terms in office. Aspiring candidates for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have until 22 September to present their candidacy; the party will then make its choice at a congress in December.

So far 17 people have declared their intention to run for NPP according to a report in the
