The city council has approved a project to irrigate the Green Point common area northwest of the city centre using water sourced from underground springs. The 15 million rand scheme involves the construction of a supply pipeline to carry the water from natural springs situated above the Molteno Reservoir in the City Bowl to Green Point, where it will be used to water the 2010 World Cup football stadium (currently under construction) and other recreational and sports facilities in the area. Until now the Green Point area, which includes the Metropolitan golf course, has been watered using potable water obtained from other, more expensive sources. Rainwater harvesting is not an option as demand for water in the area is high when rainfall is low.
