The first phase of a project to prevent the opening of informal markets in Maputo is due to get underway in June. Overseen by the city council, the operation aims to ensure the proper management of public space.

Perimeter walls will be built around the established markets of Estrela Vermelha, Mandela 1 and 2 and Museu in the built-up cidade cimento and others in more outlying areas to prevent vendors from spilling onto the surrounding streets.

Phase one will begin in the city proper, where work is expected to take three months. The second phase will involve the semi-urban areas.

The work was initially due to begin in March.
