The demolition of part of Kantanmanto market in central Accra has led to the displacement of some 2,000 stallholders, Ghana News Agency (GNA) reports. The levelling of the structure began early in the morning of 17 September under orders of the leaseholder, Bremark Ventures Limited, which plans to construct a four-storey building containing shops, offices, a restaurant and a guest house on the site. Demolition had been scheduled for the previous week but was suspended at the last minute to allow traders to vacate the premises. However, some people were reportedly still taken by surprise and watched helpless as their stores and personal effects were reduced to rubble. It seems no provisions have been made for the traders relocation.
