The labour ministry has declared Wednesday 19 November a public holiday to facilitate local elections in 43 municipalities across the country.

Meanwhile the technical secretariat of electoral administration (STAE) of Maputo together with the chief of the department of organization and electoral operations (DOOE), Gilberto de Castro, have said that everything is ready for the poll.

In the capital Maputo just over 600,000 registered voters will be called to elect their new mayor (presidente) and city council assembly. The mayoral race is between David Simango of the ruling FRELIMO party and Eduardo Namburete of the opposition RENAMO. Currently minister of youth and sport, Simango beat incumbent mayor of Maputo Eneas Comiche to become the candidate for FRELIMO at internal party elections in August.

Voting takes place from 07.00 to 18.00.
