Kenya has the sixth highest mobile phone penetration in Africa in absolute terms according to the International Telecommunications Union.

The number of subscribers in the east African country stands at 11.5 million out of a total population of 38 million. South Africa is in first place with 42.3 million subscribers out of a total population of 44 million, followed by Nigeria (40.4 out of 138 million), Egypt (30 out of 82 million), Algeria (21.5 out of 34 million) and Morocco (20 out of 34 million). Tanzania is in seventh place after Kenya with nearly eight million subscribers out of a total population of 40 million.
