The new Mozambique parliament has elected its first woman speaker. Veronica Macamo, who was previously vice speaker, was voted in unopposed after the main opposition party Renamo failed to put forward its own candidate in protest against the results of the October 2009 general elections.

Macamo is a lawyer and was elected as the ruling party Frelimo
