The ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) has won an overwhelming victory in the 8 April local elections, which were characterised by a very low turnout across the country. The final results are still not clear but on the morning of the vote itself official sources announced that the NDP had already taken 70 per cent of the 52,000 available town, city, district and provincial council seats due to lack of opposition.
