Nairobi will go down in history as the first city in the world to have a full-fledged ministry created specifically to take care of its affairs.

The ministry of Nairobi metropolitan development (NMD) is part of the bloated cabinet of 42 ministerial portfolios announced by president Mwai Kibaki and prime minister Raila Odinga recently.

The first NMD minister is lawyer Mutula Kilonzo of ODM-Kenya, who has no experience in local authorities or in the goings-on in the Nairobi city council based at City Hall. There mayor Geoffrey Majiwa of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) calls the shots with the able support of seasoned administrator John Gakuo as the town clerk.
