At least 70 mineworkers are thought to have died at Mererani near Arusha in northern Tanzania after heavy rains flooded the mine where they were working. The accident occurred on 29 March but the full scale of the disaster only become clear after special pumps had been brought in from neighbouring Kenya to extract the water from the mine.

So far 44 bodies have been recovered from the pits according to a statement from Oxfam-Ireland, which works with the Tanzania Mine Workers Development Organisation on behalf of local workers and to improve conditions in the country
