Two student chapters of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) have opened in Ghana at the Regional Maritime Academy in Accra and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi. The idea is to promote information-sharing among students in petroleum engineering and related studies and to enhance their technical and professional competence especially in view of the recent discovery of off-shore oil reserves in Ghana.

SPE is an international organisation that collects, disseminates and exchanges technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources. At the end of 2007 the society had 79,300 members worldwide.
