Street lighting has returned to the town of Ruiru on Thika Road 16 km northeast of Nairobi after the local council cleared an outstanding bill of $1,500, local sources report. Local residents had been without public illumination for 14 years. The town council has also said it plans to create a rubbish dump and acquire a refuse collection truck at a cost of $100,000.

Ruiru has expanded rapidly in recent years due to its proximity to Nairobi and pressure on housing in the capital. However infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with the population growth, leaving residents without services and compromising the development of the local economy.
