Mainland Tanzania celebrates five decades of independence on 9 December with a series of events in Dar es Salaam and the other major cities.

The national flag will be hoisted on the summit of Kilimanjaro after a marathon relay involving nearly 100 athletes from Arusha, Dodoma, Dar es Salaam and Mwanza. The flame was lit on 14 October in Butiama in the north-western Mara region, the birthplace of the country
