International Jazz Day in Addis

The Alliance Française celebrates International Jazz Day, and the centenary of the birthday of Billie Holiday with a concert by Munit Mesfin (voice) Abegazu K Shiota (keys), Girum Mezmur (guitar) and Henock Temesgen (bass).

Munit Mesfin who has now returned permanently to Ethiopia from the US has released two records of Ethiopian acoustic soul music with Jőrg Pfeil from Germany.

Abegazu K Shiota is half Japanese, half Ethiopian and is one of Ethiopia's top pop music producers. Girum Mezmur is behind the Addis Acoustic Project.

Henock Temesgen teaches jazz at Jazzamba Music School and opened the Jazzamba, one of the top Addis jazz clubs, initially as a performance space for students at the school. Jazzamba was gutted by fire in March and for the time being the club has relocated to Mama's Kitchen, a restaurant-cum-jazz club.
