African budget carrier FastJet is to offer low-cost flights between Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg in South Africa from 27  September.

The airline will offer four weekly flights and the first tickets went on sale on 1 August.

With fares for the new route beginning at $100 (exclusive of government taxes and charges), FastJet says it is offering a "substantially cheaper" service than its competitors and expects its low fares will "stimulate and increase" passenger numbers between the two cities.

A recent spot check carried out in various travel agencies in Dar es Salaam by Tanzania's Daily News revealed that an average return ticket from Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg cost about $600 while a one-way ticket was around $400.

FastJet currently transports over 40,000 passengers a month to various destinations around Tanzania, with low-cost flights from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza and Kilimanjaro as well as a Mwanza-Zanzibar service.
