Cairo begins third phase of metro line

New section of metro will connect Ataba to Cairo University.

Construction has begun on the third phase of Cairo's third metro line which will extend more than 17 km above and below ground. The metro's third phase will include 15 stations, eight of which will be underground, between Ataba in east-central Cairo and Bulaq El Dakrour near Cairo University.
The project will be financed by the European Investment Bank with a soft loan of €900 million - about 60 per cent of the total cost - with the rest being funded by the state. The project will be undertaken in three phases and is scheduled for completion within about six years.
The cost of travelling on Cairo's metro network increased recently with fares now based on commuting length rather than the old flat-rate ticket price.
