Cairo's BuSSY project to perform Anesa Wala Madame

16 March. Storytelling project relates difficulties of single women in new work.

The BuSSy theatre project, which organises workshops and performances on gender-related topics, was started by the American University in Cairo in 2006. This new work at the French Institute in Cairo on 16 March centres on the social pressures on single women.

The idea behind BuSSy is to open up discussion on gender issues, both male and female, in different communities in Egypt. Often these subjects are taboo and BuSSy has had difficulty finding public spaces for performances.

There is not just a question of official censorship but also the difficult problem of self-censorship where men and women are reluctant to discuss, let alone act out on stage, topics such as harassment, male stereotyping in a conservative society or sex education and health.
