International efforts to resolve the political impasse caused by the disputed presidential elections of 27 December have suffered a major setback following the collapse of talks between Ghanaian president and African Union chairman John Kufuor and the protagonists of the crisis.
Kufuor arrived in Nairobi on 8 January to try to broker a deal between the incumbent president Mwai Kibaki of the Party of National Unity (PNU) and his defeated opponent Raila Odinga of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Before leaving Kenya Kufuor said Kibaki and Odinga had agreed to continue dialogue under the auspices of a panel
