Names for Accra's streets

Street naming policy in progress

Accra's streets are to be named and each property numbered within the next 18 months in an initiative being undertaken by Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

Until now many of the city's streets outside the city centre have been unnamed, and directions are usually given with reference to landmarks such as buildings, markets or even trees.

Now the World Bank is assisting AMA to name Accra's 3,584 streets following a process begun by Ghana's president John Dramani Mahama in April last year.

Authorities are being assisted by community leaders in deciding street names which will be aired at a public forum before being approved by the Accra Planning Committee.
