President Mwai Kibaki has appointed an 18-member team to oversee police reform. The commission, led by retired high court judge Philip Ransley, will make recommendations to the government for the restructuring of the police force and acquisition of new equipment.

Reforms within the police force have been underway since 2004. However the new task force may also be in response to a United Nations report published earlier this year which provided evidence of
