A Woman in Waiting

This theatrical play, entitled A Woman in Waiting, is written and directed by Yael Farber. Based on Thembi Mtshali’s life, it offers a tough biographical journey through the life of a woman, who has lived during the apartheid regime from 1948 to 1994. For many years Mtshali, who was born in rural South Africa, had to put up with humiliations as a domestic worker for rich families. After long psychological struggles, she finally became a performer and singer, whose works were meant to pay tribute to South African matriarchs, who lived their life in the shadow of apartheid. This successful play won the Scotsman Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Arts Festival in 2000, the BBC Gold Sony Award in London in 2001 as well as the Best Actress Award at the Carthage Festival of Tunis in 2002.
