17 October 2009. Diwali, meaning Festival of Light, is an important festival of Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. It is celebrated predominantly in India but also in other countries with a large Indian population, such as Thailand, Kenya, Trinidad and Tobago and Tanzania, and is characterised by the lighting of lamps and releasing of fireworks, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.

Every year for Diwali Dar es Salaam is transformed into a sea of sparkling, fizzling light. With the night sky filled with rockets and the streets echoing with explosions, the festival is enjoyed by young and old alike.
