15-24 Sept 2006. Over 70 films from 27 countries are to be screened in Maputo in the first edition of the annual documentary film festival DOCKANEMA. The programme, which includes special sections on globalisation and cultural identity among other topics, also includes debates and training sessions on the documentary film industry in Mozambique. Films are being shown in venues throughout the capital, including the University Cultural Centre, the French-Mozambican Cultural Centre, Teatro Avenida, ISPU and Matola 700, as well as suburban and rural areas. The festival has been organised by Ebano Multimedia of Mozambique in conjunction with the Association of Mozambican Film makers, with funding from the Jan Vrijman Fund, named after the founder of the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam and which provides financial means for documentary film projects and festivals from developing countries. Two parallel events have been organised in Maputo to coincide with the festival: an exhibition of work by Mozambican photographer Luis Basto entitled Projet sexy at the French-Mozambican Cultural Centre; and a programme of Mozambican music at the caf-bar Gil Vicente.
