11 June 2009. Directed by Frederic Mitterand, this performance is the Italian Institute of Culture's operatic contribution to Nairobi and takes place in the institute's Michelangelo Hall. The cast is a mixture of Asian and western actors and includes Ying Huang, Richard Troxell, Ning Liang and Richard Cowan. Puccini's well loved opera is set in the Japanese city of Nagasaki and tells the moving story of a young geisha known as Butterfly who falls in love with Pinkerton, an American naval officer. Despite warnings against marrying him, Butterfly sacrifices everything for Pinkerton, with tragic results.

The institute's new premises was opened in 2003 and is situated in the heart Westlands, Nairobi's cultural quarter. The opera begins at 19.00
