28-30 July 2006. The city of Matola just outside Maputo holds the first edition of a jazz music festival in homage to the late bass guitarist Gito Balim, who was born in Matola in 1964 and assassinated in South Africa in 2004. The international line-up includes Mozambican saxophonist Moreira Chonguia and his Moreira Project, a Cape Town-based group comprising some of the citys hottest young musicians: Mark Fransman, John Hassan, Wanda Baloi and Helder Gonzaga. The programme also includes Frank Paco, South African guitarist Cameron John Ward and Jimmy Dludlu.
