Onyema Offoedu-Okeke

Homeland Memories

A solo exhibition of 25 new acrylic works on canvas by Nigeria’s sought-after artist Onyema Offoedu-Okeke. His last solo show was in London four years ago at arc Gallery.

In this new exhibition, called Homeland Memories, Offoedu-Okeke uses ancient forms, myths and symbols, such as his sculpted heads, in the context of modern society.

At the opening of his exhibition at fashionable Temple Muse on Victoria Island Offoedu-Okeke spoke of the importance of Nigerian artists drawing on their own cultural roots rather than following western styles and fashions.

Offoedu-Okeke graduated in architecture from the University of Nigeria. His book Artists of Nigeria, which was published in 2010, is a ground-breaking analysis of the development of Nigerian art over the last 100 years.
