Addis Ababas smart new international airport was officially opened in early February, marking the end of a major expansion project lasting five years. The $200-million overhaul has given the airport a spacious passenger terminal, a 3,800-m runaway with associated taxiways, a new control tower and safety equipment to bring the hub into line with international standards. The terminal building has been operational since 2003. Funding for the project came from the African Development Bank, the Kuwait Fund, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, the European Investment Bank, the Nordic Development Fund and the Ethiopian government. As a result of the expansion Bole airport has increased its annual capacity from 500,000 passengers in 2001 to a potential seven million people today.
