At least 19 people, mainly children, have been killed by flooding in central Mozambique caused by heavy seasonal rains. Thousands of homes have also been destroyed by high water while the Zambezi river, which rises in northwest Zambia near the border with Angola and Democratic Republic of Congo, is above flood alert level and the authorities are predicting that the worst is still to come.
Last year dozens of Mozambicans were killed and tens of thousands of people displaced from their homes by seasonal flooding, raising the spectre of the 2000-2001 disaster which left 700 people dead and 500,000 homeless.
