In an attempt to improve Ghanas motoring sector drivers applying for a new licence or the renewal of an old one will be issued with a credit-card type document rather than the old paper one as from August this year. The new licences will have special built-in security mechanisms to prevent falsification.

In a related provision, all motorbikes are to be given new distinctive number plates to prevent them from being used on unregistered cars to avoid tax and registration. Starting from the end of 2006 the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) will also gradually computerise the national vehicle registration system to make it more efficient.
