1,259,000 tourists visited Mozambique in 2007 according to ministry of tourism figures, representing a 21 per cent increase over the previous year. Accommodation capacity also increased by 8.2 per cent over the same period, from 15,740 rooms in 2006 to 17,035 last year. Much of the available bed space is in the capital Maputo.

Tourism has the potential to become a leading foreign exchange earner in Mozambique. In 2007 revenue from tourism stood at 103.4 million euro, compared to just over 102 million euro in 2006.
