Cairo airport to display ancient artefacts

Culture initiative to boost Egypt's tourism sector.

Cairo airport is to exhibit 39 ancient Egyptian artefacts from various eras to promote tourism in Egypt.

The airport's designated 60-sqm museum space, which opens at the end of October, will exhibit six artefacts from the Coptic Museum, 12 from the Islamic Museum and 21 pieces from the Egyptian Museum. Entry to the museum costs $3.

News of the airport promotion of Egypt's cultural heritage comes at the same time as that of the restoration of King Tutankhamun's golden burial mask, more than a year after its beard was accidentally broken off and badly reattached in the hasty repair.

The mask has now been removed from display at Cairo's Egyptian Museum and is being repaired by a German-Egyptian team.

The 3,300-year-old pharaonic mask was among artefacts discovered by British archaeologists in Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922.
